National Run for Peace from September 3 to 5 Four hundred and eighty runners will take part in the National Run for Peace which will be worked off from September 3 to 5, 2004. It has been jointly organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Asian German Sports Exchange Programme. Holcim is the principal sponsor of the run. 40 runners each from 12 towns - Puttalam, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Mannar, Ampara, Matara, Galle, Ambalantota, Colombo and Marawila will take part in the run and will converge in Kandy where the closing ceremony will take place on September 5 at the Bogambara Stadium. The runners will stop at three or four towns on the 12 different routes where the people of those respective towns will join the run in a symbolic gesture. The National Run for Peace is being organised to support Sri Lanka's peace process and to bring about understanding and friendship between the three main communities of Sri Lanka Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Jeevan Kumaratunge said that the National Peace Run will serve as a vehicle for peace and a boost for the SAF Games which will be held in Sri Lanka next year. The Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs is giving his maximum support for the event along with Deputy Director of Sports Derwin Perera, Secretary General of AAA Prema Pinnawala, Sri Lanka Tourism Board and Police. The Run for Peace is being organised by the District Sports Officers of the 12 towns and Research students of the AGSEP Philip Loder and Melanie Helmle. They are being assisted by Team co-ordinators Nicole Strohmeier, Stephy Rottmeier, Marie Thomann, Andrea Geier and Sandra Oberste. |
