Saakya wins Ole Apple Junior Grand Prix

by Richard Dwight

A delightful scream it was last friday evening at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC), when around 30 young promising golfers barely in their mid teens gathered amidst invitees and guests for the 'Ole Apple Junior Grand Prix' prize giving and dinner.

Here they were, in all their innocence enjoying the company of each other as they frolicked and shrieked in gay abandon awaiting the moment when they would have to walk up to receive their rewards for the hard work put by them on the golf course during the 12 monthly golf rounds in the 'Ole Apple Junior Grand Prix'.

Radha Sundarampillai, the co-ordinator and supervisor of the junior golf programme, serves the cause of promoting golf amongst the young with sheer commitment.

She has the knack of relating to her charges in a most endearing way and, they in turn have come to know her as guide, mentor and friend.

A significant feature of the function was that Radha tactfully allowed the young to steer the evenings program, Dinuk Gooneratne acted as compere while the captain of the junior golf committee, Sanjay Goonewardene, served as liaison and diminutive, Saharya Unamboowe, impressed with a meaningful speech where he concluded with a touching appeal from those present to assist them to get a sponsor for their next golf programme.

The president of the RCGC Tita Nathanielsz, the captain of RCGC Kumar Boralessa and the chief guest, representative of "OLE", Sisira Semasinghe, all three of them addressed the gathering and distributed the prizes which was staggered.

It was observed that they were pleased with the outcome of this year's ole Grand Prix Junior, where a number of promising golfers emerged. They were heartened to see a number of junior golfers display such enthusiasm for the sport and felt confident that they will progress to be senior champs in the future.
