News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | UNP General Secretary resigns Former Minister S.B.Dissanayake who wanted the United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to appoint him to the post of National Organiser was absent when the UNP Executive Committee met yesterday at Siri Kotha with the party leader presiding at the meeting. At this meeting the UNP General Secretary Senarath Kapukotuwa handed his letter of resignation from the Post. The UNP accepted his resignation. Ranil Wickremesinghe as party leader announced that Malik Samarawickrema has been once again appointed as chairman of the Party. He also announced the appointment of former UNP Treasurer Milroy Perera as the acting Secretary General of the party while MP Tissa Attanayake was appointed as the Deputy Secretary General of the Party and Nimal Weeraratne as Treasurer. There was no change in the party leader or his deputy. In his absence S. B. Dissanayake, who was earlier tipped to be National Organiser was appointed Head of the Committee dealing with people at the grassroots level. Party sources said that the UNP did not have a Post as "National Organiser" provided for, in its Constitution. UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe announced the names of the members leading the Party Reform Committees appointed to study the reforms necessary for the party to be more acceptable. He appointed ten such committees at this meeting. They are: * Poverty Alleviation Committee : Sajith Premadasa MP for Hambantota district. *Agriculture: Hemakumara Nanayakkara MP for Galle district. * Youth Affairs : Gayantha Karunatilleke MP. * Local Government/Provincial Councils:Gamini Jayawickrema Perera MP. *Membership Drive: Ravi Karunanayake MP. * Dealing with people: S.B. Dissanayake MP. at Grass Roots Level * Upcountry Development : P.Dayaratne MP. * Media : Prof. G.L. Peiris MP. * Trade Union : MPs Rajitha Senaratne and Gamini Lokuge. |
