News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Ranil had no confidence in his MPs in Parliament - Dinesh Hanwella group correspondent The Urban Development and Water Supply Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said that certain senior UNP MPs showed ballot papers to their party leader, after marking them at the recent election to select a Speaker. Their contemptible conduct in doing so and the violation of democratic traditions of the House proved that the UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had no confidence in his parliamentarians, he said. The Minister was addressing a meeting held at Hanwella trade centre complex recently. He said the masses should not think that the thoroughly defeated political opponent is fast asleep. 'The enemy may at any moment conspire to disrupt the smooth functioning of the government. However we would not allow the UNP to be funny with secret balloting in Parliament hereafter', he said. Gunawardena said that action would be taken to implement all the town development plans which had been overlooked during the previous regime to providing the basic needs of town dwellers as well as suburban villagers. The Hanwella town development plan will also be implemented soon, he said. Minister Gunawardena said that the Seethavake Pradeshiya Sabha had created history in corruption under the UNP rule. There are other PS members as well as officials involved in the fraudulent act. Therefore action would be taken to have them removed too, in the interest of the public, he said. |
