News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Wijedasa Rajapakse to be sworn in as National List MP today President's Counsel Wijedasa Rajapakse will be sworn in today as a National List Member of Parliament from the UPFA. A leading lawyer, Rajapakse is an authority on constitutional affairs. He was Chairman of the Press Council and the Managing Director of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. He had his education at Horewala Maha Vidyalaya, Nugegoda Sri Rewatha Maha Vidyalaya and Walasmulla Uthuru Kanumuldeniya Maha Vidyalaya. Rajapakse obtained his degree in law from the University of Colombo and served as an examiner at the university for a brief period. In 1984, he became an Attorney-at-Law and commenced practice. In 1998, he was awarded the TOYP award for the best young lawyer in the country and became the youngest President's Counsel in Sri Lanka in 2001. Rajapakse appeared in many famous cases including election petitions and cases involving Sampath Bank, World Trade Centre, HNB etc. He also played a prominent role in the process of drafting the 18th and 19th Amendments to the Constitution. He also made a significant contribution at international fora to clear the name of Sri Lanka sprint queen Susanthika Jayasinghe in the drugs test against her. He has been serving as the Managing Director of Lake House from last November. He also pioneered a case in the Supreme Court against the Land Bill introduced by the previous regime and to obtain a judgement that the Bill was inconsistent with the Constitution. Rajapakse was also appointed to the post of Deputy Chairman of the World Press Council in 2000 and served as the Chairman of the Rent Board. He also served as a director of Film and Rupavahini Corporations. |
