SL produces superior quality garments - US Ambassador

The cancellation of the garment quota system by the USA in 2005 would not affect the market for garments produced in Sri Lanka because they are of an exceptionally higher quality than those produced in most other Asian countries, said US Ambassador Jeffrey Lunstead.

The US Ambassador said this in reply to a query made by Labour Relations and Foreign Employment Minister Athauda Seneviratne, when he called on the Minister at his office recently.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Labour Relation and Foreign Employment said during the discussions held with the US Ambassador. Minister Seneviratne asked him whether the US' new policy of doing away with the quota system would endanger the market for Sri Lanka garments it presently enjoyed.

The US Ambassador said the ending of the quota system may affect certain garment producing countries in Asia.

But garments produced in Sri Lanka would enjoy the same, if not an enhanced market due to their high quality.

The US Ambassador also promised to provide US assistance to programs devised by the Labour Relations and Employment Ministry to eradicate child labour and increase productivity through better employer-employee relations.

Secretary Ministry of Labour Relation and Foreign Employment Mahinda Gammanpila was also associated with the Minister during the discussions.
