Second stage of Punyagrama programme President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has decided to seek the cooperation of philanthropists to implement the second stage of the "Punyagrama" programme covering 404 selected places of worship in the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa Districts. Stage one of the "Punyagrama" programme was inaugurated by President Kumaratunga at President's House, Colombo, on May 09 at 3.30 p.m. to coincide with the Vesak Week. "Punyagrama" is the brainchild of the President to build a virtuous society by combining the rural life with the village temple. She expects to unite the Buddhist and non-buddhist groups in the village through the Dayaka Sabhas of Buddhist temples in order to inculcate in them the spirit of "ourness" to attain physical and spiritual prosperity. To implement 22 pioneer projects through 22 temples in the difficult areas covering 11 Districts, the President allocated Rs.4.4 million at the rate of Rs.25,000 per temple and released Rs.550,000 as the first instalment. The second stage named as "Apekame Yaso Lakuna" (symbol of glory of ourness) is scheduled to be launched through 404 selected places of worship in the two districts of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa with an estimated cost of Rs.20,000 per viharaya for the provision of furniture, equipment, bed-spreads, pillows, push-cycles, petromax lamps, flasks and sets of offerings. Generous philanthropists are invited to send in their contributions for this worthy cause either to the Buddhasasana Ministry or to the Council of Human Disaster Management, No.27, Independence Square, Colombo 07. |
