Text books, uniform material bonanza before December

by Manjula Fernando

The Education Ministry will distribute school text books and uniform material before the third term holidays in December, an Education Ministry spokesperson said yesterday.

"This would ensure that all students will have new clothes and new text books at the commencement of the first term next year," she said adding that the ministry is reverting to the old procedure to distribute uniform material instead of the one used by the previous regime targeting a cut down on funds.

"Thus, all students will be entitled to free material irrespective of their social stand. The material will be distributed through the class teacher so as not to damage their dignity," the spokesperson said.

The ministry announced recently that parents will not have to apply for the subsidy in the future, as had been the case for the past two years.

Previously they were required to fill in the application appearing on newspapers handed over them to the Divisional Secretaries, collect the free coupons from Grama Niladaris and obtain the material from co-operative societies. Only those who stick to this procedure were issued material. Still there were many complaints that co-operatives always ran out of stocks.

The Education Ministry under the instruction of the President, who is also the Education Minister, is also exploring the possibility of obtaining either part of the material or the full requirement from the local manufacturers.
