More Chartered Marketers to Corporate Board Rooms

"Despite the immense value and equity Marketing generates to any business, marketing is still seen as a specialist function and marketers are yet to gain recognition as professionals in driving businesses in Sri Lanka. Most corporates are still driven by professionals with a finance background.

CIM has developed its strategic direction in taking more professional marketers to the helm of corporate governance through the Chartered Marketer status", said Rasika Wickramatunga, Membership Development Officer of CIM Sri Lanka.

"We have 128 Chartered Marketers and only 35% of them are at CEO, MD Country Managers and Director levels", he said.

Rasika, a Chartered Marketer is a Member of CIM (UK) and has CIM's Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing and an MBA from PIM, University of Sri Jayewardenepura and is the Head of Sales and Marketing of Bogawantalawa Plantations Ltd.

The Membership Development core process of CIM Sri Lanka is committed to grooming its members to corporate leadership positions through a fully-fledged action plan, developed after brain storming sessions among its Chartered Marketers.

The vehicle for such progression into the corporate echelons will be the "Chartered Marketer" status, the individual charter bestowed by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (UK) on its members for their commitment to Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

Members are required to undertake programs that will enhance their knowledge and skills after qualifying with the CIM's Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing. The CIM Sri Lanka Branch has already focused on three strategic directions in helping its members to achieve the Chartered Marketer Status and progress into the corporate boardrooms.

"Firstly, the CIM Talking Point and Professional Series which are evening meetings and workshops will help the marketers keep abreast of the latest corporate developments. A series of grooming programs, specifically targeted at the Chartered Marketers will help mould them into capable corporate leaders.

To supplement all, an exclusive publication is envisaged, that will bring in educational and practical material," he said.

CIM is also taking an active role in promoting the "Chartered Marketer" status as the hallmark of a professional marketer to corporate and business leaders.

"Our prime aim is to make it possible for the remaining 65% of Chartered Marketers to reach board level positions while also encouraging members to commit themselves to continuous professional development, to make them Chartered Marketers", Rasika said.

CIM is the world's largest professional body for marketing and has 120 Chartered marketers, over 650 members and over 3,400 students in Sri Lanka. CIM Sri Lanka has been highly acclaimed for its innovative approach, programs and has also won the Chairman's Decanter in three consecutive years for having the highest percentage of Chartered Marketers among its membership.
