Boost for Lanka's coconut and rubber-based products in Korea

by Sudarshana Perera

Potential for Lankan consumer goods in Korea.

Sri Lanka's coconut, rubber and handicraft industries will be promoted in Korea which is the second biggest country with diverse trade and market potential in the North East Asian region. Sri Lankan companies dealing with coconut, rubber based products and gift items will participate in the "Seoul Consumer Goods Fair" to be held from May 19 to 22 at the Seoul Trade Exhibition Centre" in Korea.

Garnet Polymers (Pvt) Ltd, Heim Engineering and Diacon will exhibit their products to explore and assess the potential of the Korean Market .Representatives from Mihiri Paint and Auto Care (Pvt) Ltd, Sawara International and New Ceyco Trading Company are also already in Korea to hold one to one business meeting with Korean exporters.

Deputy Director of KOTRA Colombo, Yu Byoungwoo said that the exhibition would also help find potential buyers for Sri Lanka's coconut and rubber based products and possible ventures for transfer of technology and investment opportunities in Sri Lanka. I am very optimistic that if Sri Lanka will be successful in tapping the Korean Market.

There will emerge vast potential for local coconut and rubber based products manufacturers and processors ", Byoungwoo said.

He said that Sri Lanka's small and medium term coconut and rubber manufacturers and processors would be given further chances to tap the international market by which the industry would be able to compete with the global market while updating know-how with their industry processing. It is time for Sri Lanka to move towards different countries rather than concentrating on traditional markets, he said.

"There is much potential for Sri Lankan consumer goods in Korea and some Sri Lankan businessmen will have discussions to improve bilateral trade", he said.

According to KOTRA Colombo sources Seoul Consumer Goods Fair is the only international fair with a wide range of products which has been held in Korea so far.
