Speed rail from Katunayake 
Airport to Colombo

A super luxury train service will be introduced from Colombo to the Bandaranaike International Airport soon. The service which will only take 20 minutes from the Airport to Colombo will be set up with assistance from the Government of the People’s Republic of China. 

US 100 m dollar outright grant for development

Nearly US $ 100 million will be immediately available to Sri Lanka as an outright grant under the US Millennium Challenge Account, Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar disclosed yesterday. Sri Lanka was selected as one of 16 countries eligible for enhanced US aid under the new Millennium Challenge initiative last week. Ambassador Devinda Subasinghe signed the agreement on behalf of Sri Lanka.

Lakshman Kadirgamar in interview with CNN:

Ceasefire will hold, all views will be heard

Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, in an interview with CNN's Asia Today, Tuesday, asserted that the ceasefire was in no danger of collapsing. Minister Kadirgamar, in Washington on a four-day official visit, told CNN that there was absolutely no doubt about the continuation of the Government-LTTE ceasefire. "There is no doubt about it. The ceasefire will hold," he stressed.

Cabinet decisions

The Cabinet approved a decision to revert back to the old procedure for distribution of School uniform material so as to allow students to collect their material through the school teacher. The present complicated procedure, through which the parents were made to wait in long queues and anguish for hours before bureaucrats to collect coupons for the free material will be cancelled from this year.

Rs.722 million compensation for communal violence victims

Cabinet Spokesman and Media Minister Reginald Cooray said President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga presented the Cabinet paper yesterday to obtain funds to implement the recommendations of the 'Truth Commission' that inquired into the incidents of 1981-1985 communal clashes, especially the communal riots in 1983.

Talks on talks likely in three months

The Government yesterday expressed optimism that 'Talks on talks' with the LTTE could be resumed in three months. At the weekly Cabinet press briefing yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman Media Minister Reginald Cooray said that he foresees direct dialogue between the representatives of the Government and LTTE taking place by August.
