Lanka draw against Zimbabwe 'A'

Sa'adi Thawfeeq reporting from Zimbabwe

HIGHFIELD, Harare, Monday - The three-day practice game between the touring Sri Lankans and a Zimbabwe 'A' side predictably ended in a draw at the Takashinga CC grounds here yesterday.

Zimbabwe 'A' finished on 306 for eight wickets in their second innings when both sides decided to call the match off half an hour into the final session of the third and final day.

Zimbabwe 'A' batting first scored 294 and Sri Lanka replied with 461, gaining a first innings lead of 167 runs. There were a few alterations made to the individual figures of the batsman and the extras by the official scorers in consultation with the two umpires. A four that was initially given as leg byes was eventually credited to Zimbabwe 'A' opener Trevor Gripper whose final score was 97 and not 93.

Fast bowler Dilhara Fernando thus conceded 47 runs in his 13 overs and not 43. The poor positioning of the score box and the seating for the press prevented a clear view of the umpires signals and the match in general and, a led to a lot of hardship for both scorers and journalists covering the match.
