Waiting...

WAR.....
What made you join
We still can't contemplate
They say
'Missing in action'
But we can't miss you
Three long years
We've waited
To see you coming
Your haversack hanging
Carelessly on your back
Smiling...
We know you too are waiting
To return
We are waiting
To hear the sounds
Of your heavy boots
At our doorstep
With swollen hearts
Waiting....

Pearl Weerasinghe

*********

The little fisher girl

The sea rolled ashore a green bubbling broth
Her creamy crest a weave of filth and debris
A child stumbled forth wearing small clingy cloth
Face with bright eyes and brown hair soft curly

Will I have today my dhal and my bread?
She wondered with feelings of dread
Her mum was quite sick and dad very dead
In her world filled with faces dark surly

She sat quietly on steaming hot sand
Tracing patterns without mind or a care
Hunger gnawed her deep with sharp acid knife
The grime black upon her wild unkept hair

In the huts nearby of cadjan and rotting wood
The man squatted on huge bulky legs
Hard eyes watched the child with passion in his loins
The ache in him that was giving him no rest

A wish

Thoughts of you come to my mind
Not once but a thousand times a day
Helpless to care for you as you are miles away
Take care my beloved we are not there to protect you

We can only offer prayers thinking of you
We long to see your face even in our dreams
Or to hear your loving voice call us with affection
Dreaming of the day you will be back

After many years with a feather in your cap
Take my strength too dear son
To reach the goal which has to be won
Be patient, go steadily, you'll be rewarded in the end

We'll wait with open arms for that day
Which you'll care for the sick with your patient way
Lord Buddha please guide my son
And protect him till he has won
