Inspirations

A solid experiment

by Anjana Gamage

Kolithabanu Dissanaike, veteran vocalist and a senior music lecturer attached to the Institute of Aesthetic Studies, Kelaniya University, will launch his latest CD titled "Inspirations" - at the Lionel Wendt Theatre on May 11 at 6.30 pm.

In an exclusive interview with the "Artscope", Kolithabanu said; "This CD will include the Ragas from the North Indian as well as the local folk songs and music. There are altogether six musical cuts that I have prepared under several themes. Each one will run for 7 to 12 minutes".

Out of the six musical cuts, the "Kuweni Asna" which is performed at the "Kohomba Kankariya" ritual has been titled "Tears", the second musical cut is made out of "Bairagi" raga in North Indian music and is a spiritual dialogue between a recluse and a female dancer which has been titled as "Perception".

A depiction of the gap between various cultures based on 'Hamsadhdvaniya in Karnataka music and local folk music interludes. It is titled "Evaluation". A musical creation based on Tilakkamod Raga has been titled as Sathala, another musical creation based on Raga Jog has been titled as "Swara Sadana".

Sadana means the spiritual behaviour and the song "Ganga" - the endless journey written by Dr. Praneeth Abeysundara and music composed by Wijerathne Ranatunge is the last creation in the CD.

"Unlike in Sri Lanka, there is a big public demand for chamber music in western countries and India. Only a good musical creation could appeal to all corners of the world. While I was learning music as a student, I have listened to a vast collection of solid pieces of maestros of the art and I grew fond of them. But it is sad to say that there is no such trend in Sri Lanka. My main attempt with this latest experimental CD is to make an awareness on chamber music.

There is no commercial value in this kind of music experiments, but we must be concerned with the spiritual value of the effort and should do more music experiments for the future generation", he said.

Veteran musician Dr. Pandit W.D. Amaradeva and celebrated dance personalities Chithrasena and Vajira will be the chief guests at the launching ceremony.

Prof. Carlo Fonseka, musicians Victor Ratnayake, Visharada Sanath Nandasiri, Ravibandu Vidyapathi, Dr. Praneeth Abeysundera and Anura Hemachandra will deliver talks at the launching ceremony.

A dance recital by Channa Wijewardena and Ravibandu Vidyapathy will enliven three musical experiments included in the CD.

Kolithabanu released his first audio cassette titled "Pera Nalu Gee" containing Noorthi and Nadagam songs four years ago.
