Film review :

Non-stop comedy

Kuththu (Punch)
Shown at - Cine city

by Karthiga Rukmanykanthan

Scenes from the film

The title might sound new but there is nothing absolutely new about the story. It is the same old story the Tamil filmgoers have been watching for generations. The hero beats up the villain and marries his daughter. Silambarasan has actively worked with full dedication, which is reflected in the fight scenes, and some other supporting actors have also contributed to the cast.

The only aspect of the film, which makes the audience patiently sit on their seat is the non-stop comedy. The dialogues carry a good sense of humour even though they are sometimes irrelevant to the story. The new heroine has failed to attract the audience with her performance. Some songs are audible. With his energetic and clean dance, Silambarasan has brought some life to the choreography.

Silambarasan is a university student from a middle class family. He is irresponsible and he has the habit of going against his father's advice. He doesn't obey his father and does whatever he thinks is right. The university life is shown with humour but the scenes are totally out of reality. He performs a dance in a university program with a girl.

This song has a good beat but the choreography isn't creative enough to suit its beat. A thug of the girl's father who comes to watch the program gets angry seeing these two dancing together.

He warns Silambarasan not to even talk to the girl in the future but Silambarasan challenges him saying that just to fight him and defy his order he is going to fall in love with the girl. In this way, Silambarasan begins fighting with the girl's father. The story is extended using some trends which are used for films with this kind of theme.

Silambarasan bravely and intelligently fights the girl's father and tactfully marry her. A great sense of hilarity has been used to show the tactics used by Silambarasan. The scenes are appealing but remind some of the old movies. Silambarasan punches all his enemies and proves that he is a good fighter and he is also quite witty at certain places.

He loves doing commercial roles but the audiences prefer him doing roles, which omit commercial elements like in his previous movie Kovil. Karunas has contributed a lot this time to the comedy and Livingston has given him a good support.

The director Venkatesh who is also the cinematographer for this movie has used his camera effectively in the fight scenes. The camera plays a great role in bringing the effect of the fight scenes.

As a director, Venkatesh has done a satisfactory job by cleverly blending the two genres action and comedy but could not introduce a unique plot. The music by Srikanth Deva is satisfying but the choreography by Shiva Shanker this time is insipid. The highlight of the movie is the stunt used by the stunt master Super Suparayan and Silambarasan's dedication in achieving the perfection of these stunts. Kuthu is pleasant to watch but futile.
