Glorious victory for UPFA - Ashraff Congress

The result of the election of the North Western Provincial Council held on the 24th instant clearly demonstrates not only the glorious victory for the United People's Freedom Alliance, but also goes further to affirm and confirm the verdict given by the people in favour of UPFA in the recently concluded General Election, said S. Subairdeen, the leader of the Ashraff Congress, in a press release issued yesterday.

The release said 31 out of 52 seats have been won by UPFA which accounts for 60 per cent of the votes cast, while securing a majority of 180,000 votes over the second highest party. What is remarkable here is, that in spite of the less vigorous campaigning by the hierarchy of the UPFA due to its pre-occupation connected with the formation of a government and the election of a Speaker for the 13th Parliament, the people have on their own came forward to ensure the victory of the UPFA.

What is noticeable is that the voters have paid special attention to the national issues rather than their regional issues, confining to their province. Therefore it is a definite mandate of the people given to the UPFA government to carry forward their policies manifested in their manifesto.

Therefore it is implied that a heavy moral responsibility is cast upon the shoulders of the smaller parties like J.H.U., S.L.M.C and C.W.C. to ensure that no attempts shall be made to vitiate or nullify the clear mandate given by the people to the UPFA.

When we analyse the performance of the Muslim voters specially of Kurunegala District we can easily notice that more than 40 per cent of them have voted with UPFA which is a conspicuous sign with regard to the Muslim political factor in this election.
