Rathanapala by Chamikara Weerasinghe Bodu Dana Ekathuwa leaders yesterday condemned the seven parliamentarians of the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), saying they had let down the Buddhist public by voting in favour of a UNF nominee for the post of Speaker at the first session of the 13th Parliament on April 22. Addressing a media briefing at Nippon Hotel, Executive member of Bodu Dana Ekatuwa, Prof. Ven. Atthangane Rathanapala Thera charged that the JHU had dashed the expectations of the Buddhists who cast their votes for the JHU. The JHU had voted for the UNF rejected by the majority of the people for acting as a puppet of the imperialist, anti-national and anti-Buddhist forces, he said. "It was alarming to see how members of the Supreme Sangha Council of the JHU turned away from their avowed principle to build a Dharma Rajya by throwing their lot with the UNF at any cost," he said. "The JHU appears to have undertaken a contract to move the country towards an Eelam Rajya and not as a Dharma Rajya under the circumstances," he said. Ven. Dambara Amila Thera said it is reasonable to assume that the conduct by JHU MPs at the election of the Speaker, confirms the belief that it was being used as a cats paw by imperialists to further their designs. Asked to comment on their position, JHU leader Ven. Ellawela Medhananda Thera told the Daily News they were merely compelled to cast two votes in favour of the UNF to nullify the two votes given to the Freedom Alliance by two JHU members violating the party's stand to abstain from voting. "We did not intend to cause any damage to any party," he said. |
