Caltex powers club rugby

The Inter-club League Rugby Tournament and the Clifford Cup knock-out Rugby tournament will be sponsored by Caltex Lubricants Lanka Limited. Having come forward to sponsor rugby in 1999 with a three year contract Caltex will continue to sponsor club rugby having extended and renewed their contract.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Galle Face Hotel the President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union Mohan Balasuriya said that Caltex came to sponsor club rugby at a critical moment when the earlier sponsor pulled out midway during the season in 1999.

This is the fifth successive year Caltex is sponsoring club rugby and their sponsorship has helped to develop the sport in a big way. with most of the clubs fielding foreigners a keenly contested league tournament can be anticipated.

The Managing Director of Caltex Lubricants Kishu Gomes thanked the SLRFU for giving them the opportunity to sponsor club rugby. Sri Lanka rugby has progressed well and regained its lost glory.

The inclusion of foreign players has helped to generate spectator interest. The Rugby Union is popularising the game throughout the country including the Northern Province.

He appealed to all rugby enthusiasts to support the SLRFU in its endeavour to improve the standard and make the country a force to be reckoned with in the international arena.

Rugby, which is associated with power, energy & strength, blends well with the brand proposition of Caltex, which markets high performance products such as Caltex Havoline Fully Synthetic & Caltex Delo DXJ.

During it's five-year association with Sri Lanka Rugby. Caltex has contributed to the sport in many ways by supporting SLRFU to popularize sport, to motivate the clubs and players, to take the game to the outstations etc.

Rugby was a very popular sport in the years gone by and Caltex together with the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) is committed to ensure that the game once again gets the pride of place in the country's sporting arena.

This year too, Caltex has plans to launch special media promotions to popularize the sport and to create excitement amongst the rugby fans with opportunities to win many prizes & memorobilia.

In addition, Caltex is planning to continue the glittering awards ceremony conducted to recognise & appreciate the best players of the tournament- Caltex Touchdown Rugby Awards" where they will felicitate the Best Ruggerite, Best Captain, Best Forward & The Best three Quarter apart from the overall winners of the Caltex Rugby League.

All in all, this season is poised to offer some good competitive rugby & will provide a good training ground for the next generation of International players.

Caltex is thankful to the SLRFU for their attempts to develop the sport gradually. Last year, the union has made elaborate plans on telecasting one key match per week on television and with this year having taken the decision to add foreign players to club teams to add more competition and glamour.

This is a giant step taken by the union to take the game to the masses. In addition to the live coverage on TV other promotions planned by Caltex will definitely add on to the excitement of the sports loving public. Radio promotions for listeners to win exciting promotional give aways from Caltex & an event similar to the selection of the Most Popular Ruggerite & the Most Popular Rugby Club is in the pipe line of action for this season as well.

Sports and caltex has always gone hand in hand. Our close association with other sports such as Motor racing - that has been powered by the Caltex Havoline brand has contributed in maintaining one of the largest racing reams and encourages new talent to be a part of Team Caltex, supporting club cricket to mould the best for the nation, school boxing - enhancing and supporting talent to shine & not die due to lack of funding, Indoor Cricket - experiencing a new way to play the most popular sport, and Volleyball - nurturing the raw talents of champion school spikers are a few examples that could be brought about to our closeness to sport.

In all these instances the company has chosen each sport keeping in mind the contribution each sport has to the sporting communities at large. (R.S.)
