Southern Provincial Council Minister's murder:

Special team deployed to arrest another suspect

The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) investigating the murder of Southern Provincial Council Minister M.K. Ranjith alias Chandi Malli, filing a further report before Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Sarath C. Karunaratne, said they have deployed a special team to arrest another suspect allegedly involved in the killing.

Investigators told Court they are looking for a suspect who allegedly drive the vehicle with the assailants after the killing.

Earlier, Police told Court they had prepared the dossier of the investigation into the killing to be forwarded to the Attorney General for his advise.

The CCD informed Court they had not yet received the Government Anyalist's report on the weapon and spent bullets used by the assailant.

The Judge directed the prison authorities to produce all five murder suspects before the special Court in the Prison Department premises and remand them until April 30.

Earlier, the CCD forwarded the weapon and spent bullets used by the assailant, to the Government Analyst for a report.

CCD Director Senior SP Sarath Lugoda said a special team had been deployed to arrest the army deserter wanted in connection with the murder.

The investigators arrested six suspects alleged involved in the killing. Sunil Ratnaweera, the main suspect was killed while being taken to the Hambantota Courts.

The other five suspects are R.W. Jayaratne alias Rahula, R.W. Jayawardena, P.G. Jagath Kumara alias Pallethrana Jagath, A.A. Wijelal, H.A. Prasanna alias Podi Malli and M.A. Sugath alias Loku Malli.

The Provincial Council Minister was shot dead by unidentified gunmen close to the High Security Zone, York Street, Colombo on May 25 morning.

He was killed while returning after appearing before the CID on a Court order.

Southern Range DIG D.W. Prathapasinghe is directing investigations conducted by Director CCD Senior SP Sarath Lugoda and assisted by SP Gamini Dissanayake of the Police Legal Division, ASPs Priyantha Fernando, Hettiarachchi, RSI C.B.K. Iddamalgoda and Constable Gamini.
