Jayaratne pledges to develop up country areas

by Pradeep Kumara Dharmaratne

The Soulbery Commission recommended the setting up of the Kandyan Peasantry Commission to develop the up country areas.

The President has however created a new ministry for up country development under the United People's Freedom Alliance, said Telecommunication and Up Country Development Minister D.M. Jayaratne assuming duties in his new ministry at Getambe, Kandy.

Jayaratne said, the establishment of the Kandyan on Peasantry Commission was sequel to the representations made by the Kandyan leaders and the up country people for a special development initiative to offset the damage inflicted by the British in 1815.

Today, the Kandyan Peasantry Commission set up on the recommendations of a four-member committee which included T.B. Panabokke and M.D. Banda has been transformed into a full-fledged ministry under the UPFA.

"We are determined to discharge the heavy responsibilities devolved upon us with a sense of commitment," he stressed.

The Minister deplored the existence of a number of primitive villages in the up country areas whose mode of transport is the age-old, 'Tawalama'.

Such obsolete relics of a bygone era is a disgrace to the country in this age of modern technology.

"We hope to herald a new era with the application of modern technology to agriculture and industry and also ameliorate the infrastructure base of the health and education sectors," the Minister said.

Deputy Minister, Rohitha Abyegunawardena assured that he would do his utmost for the up country development drive by co-ordinating and mobilising all available resources.
