Police promotions soon

Inspector General of Police Indra de Silva announced that over 1,900 police constables, 1,600 sergeants and 700 sub inspectors will be promoted to the next rank within the next two weeks.

The IGP addressing the media yesterday at the Police Headquarters said that several Inspectors, Chief Inspectors and Assistant Superintendents will also get their due promotions along with women police personnel.

Former Mahinda College Principal dies

J. H. Gunasekara who served as the first Principal of Mahinda College Galle after the schools take over, died aged 82 years.

Gunasekara served as Principal from 1962 to 1974 and his period is considered a golden era of the school as it produced the best all Island school cricket and athletics teams and the best cadet troop during this period. Gunasekara also functioned as a patron of the Mahinda College OBA.

His remains are now lying at his residence at no 21, Mahinda Mawatha, Galle. Cremation takes place at the Galle fort on April 22 at 5.30 pm.

All old Mahindians have been requested to attend the cremation wearing the school tie.

TNA MPs meet Prabhakaran

Newly elected MPs of the Tamil National Alliance met the leader of the Liberation Tigers for discussions Tuesday in Kilinochchi. The TNA's twenty two MPs will hold a press conference Tuesday afternoon to explain the policies and plants of the alliance, LTTE officials said, a TamilNet report stated.

S. P. Thamilchelvan was also present at the meeting with the MPs at the LTTE's political division headquarters in Kilinochchi.

Death of former ANCL employee

The death occurred on Monday of B. A. Ariyasena of Siriderana Watta, Yakkala, a former employee attached to the ANCL Production Department.

He was 67. Mr. Ariyasena who first joined ANCL as an employee attached to the Lino Department was serving in the Production Department of ANCL at the time of his retirement.

He leaves his wife and three children. Funeral takes place at the Kasagahawatta Public Cemetery, Gampaha on today, April 21 afternoon.
