Forty Homeopathy doctors registered under the Homeopathy Medical Council of the Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Welfare underwent a seven month weekend training program in the management of medical emergencies and minor surgery. The course was conducted at the Mahaweli Kendraya Auditorium from September 2003 to February this year. The Chairman of the Homeopathy Medical Council, Dr. T. C. Peiris (M. D. Homeopathy Maradavada University, India) in a press release from the ministry states: "Most of the lecturers who conducted the course did it on a voluntary basis and declined any payment. As a result the Medical Council was able to save about Rs. 50,000 for the council. Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Health Ranjith Silva, was present on the final day of the course. He was welcomed by D. M. Dharmatilake, Registrar of the Council who expressed his confidence that the Homeopathic system of medicine will make great progress now that Homeopathy is placed directly under the Ministry of Health. During the course of his speech Dr. Peiris stressed that given this type of training the Homeopaths who had undergone this medical experience would be in a better position to practise with greater confidence in situations when they will be called upon to attend to medical emergencies and minor surgery. He also made a special request to De Silva for financial provisions from the WHO to train the next batch of Homeopaths on similar line and also to send a selected group from the first batch for a further intensive practical training on the same subjects in a hospital in India. De Silva expressed his satisfaction that these Homeopathic practitioners have had this opportunity to benefit from the training program and that he will explore possibilities of providing funds from the ministry to conduct training programmes in future as requested by Dr. Peiris. Dr. S. D. P. Perera and Dr. Shanta Kumara expressed their gratitude to Dr. Peiris in particular for the initiative he had taken in organising the course for the benefit of the homeopathic practitioners. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. D. S. Wijeratna. |
