by Sudarshana Perera The Chinese Government will build a state-of-the-art Performing Arts Centre to Sri Lanka on a request made by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga from the Chinese governemnt. The new donation which is claimed to be the Biggest Performing Arts Centre in South Asia will be constructed soon at a site adjoining the John de Silva Arts Theatre in Colombo. The decision was conveyed to the Minister of Finance Dr. Sarath Amunugama when the Chinese Ambassador Sun Guoxiang paid a courtesy call on the Minister yesterday. Minister Amunugama said that as a gesture of goodwill and healthy bilateral diplomatic ties, the Chinese government has donated the new centre. The Performing Arts Centre will add a new dimension to boost Sri Lanka's culture while helping the artistes to achieve better standards and improve their talents. The Centre will also house with 1244 seats and parking space for around 200 vehicles. The Minister said that apart from the Performing Arts Centre, the discussions were also focussed on developing Country's infrastructure, housing, rural electricity and streamlining the delivery of electricity with Chinese aid. |
