by Pradeepkumara Dharmaratne The public exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy begun on April 17 is now in progress with the entire Kandy town engulfed in a sea of white clad Buddhist devotees. The city streets richly decorated with banners and flags are glowing under multi-coloured electric bulbs throughout the nights. According to Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijayeratne, over five hundred thousand devotees had paid obeisance to the Sacred Tooth Relic by April 20. Yesterday (20), Chief Justice Sarath Nanda Silva, Kandy High Court Judge D.S.C. Lekam Wasam, Central Province DIG Nimal Mediwaka and SSP Gunatilleke Banda paid homage at the Maligawa. The public exposition begins at 1.00 p.m. and ends at 6.00 p.m. daily till May 1 and the hours of exposition will not be extended under any circumstances. Malwatte Chapter Maha Nayaka Ven. Rambukwelle Sri Vipassi Thera, Asgiriya Chapter Maha Nayaka Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkhitha Thera, the Anu-Nayaka Theras and the Diyawadana Nilame are engaged in-charge of the "Thewawa" activities. Special bus and train services have been arranged for the occasion. The entire temple premises including the golden canopy, main entrance and "Panchnali Roopaya, have been picturesquely refurbished to suit the occasion. |
