by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi The 13th Parliament will meet tomorrow. The newly elected 225 members of Parliament will be sworn in before the Speaker who is to be elected in the morning. The government will be led in the House by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse who was the Opposition Leader in the previous Parliament. Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will revert to his Opposition Leader's seat when the new Parliament meets tomorrow. The thirteenth parliament includes a few significant features. This Parliament will have nine Buddhist monks elected through the Jathika Hela Urumaya. There was only one Buddhist monk in the previous Parliament. Another feature is that 12 women Parliamentarians will be taking their seats in the Government and the Opposition. On the minority front, the total number of MPs from a single party from the North East has increased to 22. They are from the Tamil National Alliance or the Ilangai Tamil Arasu Kachchi. This number breaks the record of 18 MPs from the Tamil United Liberation Front in the 1977 Parliament where Appapillai Amirthalingam occupied the office of the Opposition Leader. |
