Top drivers and riders battle for Fox Hill supremacy by Bernard Perera The 12th Annual Fox Hill Motor Cross 2004 is scheduled for today (Saturday) April 17 at Diyatalawa track commencing 9.00 a.m. The Fox Hill Motor Cross famous for its thrills and spills is organised by Sri Lanka Army Academy along with Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee is conducted by Sri Lanka Association for Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDAR) is also considered a part of the 2004 SLARDAR championship. This was included as an event for the championship last year. All leading drivers who are chasing the 2004 championship are billed to compete here today. The drivers who are in battle for supremacy in the super class event cars over 2500 cc up to 3500 cc are Aravinda Premadasa, Dinesh Deheragoda, Dan Dissanayake, Dinesh Jayawardene and Rizvi Farook and Javed Wahab. This event will also see the best cars specially the Mitsubishi Evolutions in action with around four of them under top drivers. Last years champion Aravinda Premadasa will have a tough time who is behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Evo VI, with latest Evo VIII driven by Dinesh Deheragoda in the race. All drivers who have spent the week in the hill country, competing in Hill climbs at Mahagastota and Radella and done well in lowering timings for the courses are in peak condition, their machiners too are in fine shape and is sure to give their best here today for the motor racing fans who gather in large numbers. Among the other drivers who are competing here are Rohan de Silva, Romani de Silva, Ravi Mayadunne, S. Mannapperuma, Sheran Fernando, the Citroen Saxca man along with the sole woman competitor from the Mobil camp young Shehara de Silva. Young Shehara became the first Sri Lankan woman driver to race along with male counterparts behind the wheel of a Formula a few months ago at the Pannala race track. She has done well two days ago at the Mahagastota Hill Climb also making a second best time in her class. Last year too she was racing on this track and had to put out of the race due to an accident. She is sure to achieve the best this year provided everything goes well for her. The two wheeler competition too will be a hectic battle with Damien Goonetilleke, Safraz Junaid, Dhammika Pieris and Maduranga Caldera competing in different classes of events. They will face stiff competition from Indian riders representing TVS group. Last year S. Vijayakumar from Banglore played a dominant role winning four events on his TVS 125. With weather helping the organisers the drivers and riders are sure give their best to trill the large crowds expected to witness this annual event at Diyatalawa. |
