Women's triangular cricket : Lanka play India in opener

by Chris Dhambarage

Sri Lanka will take on India in the curtain raiser of the Singer Asia Cup women's triangular cricket tournament match at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place today.

The Lankans will be fielding a well balanced side led by wicket keeper batswoman Thanuja Ekanayake. They are very much confident of reaching the final having enjoyed a great amount of success in their previous two tournaments against Pakistan and the West Indies.

The Sri Lankan team is fresh after a highly successful series against the West Indies where they made a clean sweep winning all seven one day internationals. Before that they routed Pakistan by the same margin during their series in Pakistan. The Sri Lankan team is ranked sixth in the overall standings and are expected to reach the final of this tournament.

Sri Lanka will also meet Pakistan on April 21 at the same venue and are scheduled to play against India for the second time on April 23 at the SSC grounds. Sri Lanka will play their last preliminary round game against Pakistan on April 27 before the final on April 29 at the SSC grounds.

This tournament is quite a significant one as it could be a good preparation for their home series against Australia in August and for the next World Cup to be staged in South Africa next year. All matches of the tournament will consists of 50 overs per side.

Sri Lankan coach Kosala Kuruppuarachchi expressed his confidence saying that the present outfit is studded with a number of good all round and is confident of defeating both India and Pakistan. He said that the home conditions should give the players the added advantage and will be banking heavily on the spinners to deliver the goods.

The team has been training hard in preparation for this tournament and the Lankans are determined to maintain their impressive record at home. Meanwhile India will field an experienced team for this tournament and had their first training session at the SSC grounds, yesterday.

The Indian team will be captained by Mamatha Maben from Karnataka who has been a regular member of the state side since 1987.

The all rounder lost a couple of cricketing years due to a dislocated shoulder in 2000/2001. She took India into new heights by successfully leading the team to a 4-1 series victory against the World champions New Zealand last year and defeating the West Indies 5-0 in February this year.

Right hand batswoman Mithali Raj of Andhra Pradesh is the vice captain of the team having made her debut for the state side at the tender age of ten years. She is the main stay in the Indian batting line up and holds the World record for making the highest individual score - 214 against England in 2002/2003. She also has an one day international century to her credit having made 114 against Ireland in 1999/2000.

India will take on their arch rivals Pakistan in the second match on April 19 at the same venue. They will meet Sri Lanka in the second match on April 23 at the SSC grounds and will confront Pakistan again on April 25 at the Asgiriya Stadium.
