Experienced Indian women cricketers here for triangular

by Chris Dhambarage

India will field an experienced team for the Singer triangular series women's cricket tournament conducted by the Women's Cricket Association of Sri Lanka which is to be worked off from April 17 to 28 in Colombo and Kandy.

The Indian team will arrive in Sri Lanka on April 15 and will have their first training session on the following day. Their opening match of the tournament will be held on April 17 against Sri Lanka at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place. They will take on their arch rivals Pakistan in the second match on April 19 at the same venue. They will meet Sri Lanka in the second match on April 23 at the SSC grounds and will confront Pakistan again on April 25 at the Asgiriya Stadium.

The Indian team will be captained by Mamatha Maben from Karnataka who has been a regular member of the state side since 1987.

The all rounder lost a couple of cricketing years due to a dislocated shoulder in 2000/2001. She took India into new heights by successfully leading the team to a 4-1 series victory against the World champions New Zealand last year and defeating the West Indies 5-0 in February this year.

Right hand batswoman Mithali Raj of Andhra Pradesh is the vice captain of the team having made her debut for the state side at the tender age of ten years.

She is the main stay in the Indian batting line up and holds the World record for making the highest individual score - 214 against England in 2002/2003. She also has an one day international century to her credit having made 114 against Ireland in 1999/2000.

Anju Jain from Delhi is another solid batswoman who opens the batting in addition to her duties as the regular wicket keeper of the side.

She has represented India in three World Cups and was captain of the team which secured the third place in the World Cup in New Zealand. Jaya Sharma also from Delhi is the other opening batswoman of the side having made her debut for India in 2002. She was named as the best batswoman of the Rani inter zonal tournament held in Pune in 2002 and was the woman of the series against New Zealand in December 2003.

Ex captain Anjum Chopra from Delhi is another consistent run getter having emerged as the top scorer at the previous World Cup in New Zealand and was also among the top four in the World Cup ratings. The Indian bowling attack will be spearheaded by left arm spinner Neetu David who took a record breaking eight wickets in a test match against England.

Right arm pacewoman Jhulan Goswami from West Bengal is the fastest bowler in the Indian side having won the woman of the match in the home series against England and the best bowler in the Zonals held in Pune in 2001.

Amita Sharma from Delhi is another good fast bowler having won the best bowlers award at the nationals while playing for the Delhi under 19 side.
