Past rulers have not used valuable resources to develop country - MP

S. Duraisamy, Maskeliya group correspondent

Nimal Premawanse Jayasinghe, UPFA member of Parliament for Nuwara-Eliya district paid visits to Rozalle Buddhist Vihare, Watawala Buddhist Vihare, Hatton Buddhist Vihare, Maskeliya Shri Shanmuganathar Swamy Temple, Maskeliya Buddhist Vihare, Burnswick estate, and Norwood Vihare and participated in special pirith ceremonies and poojas conducted there, on Sunday.

The ceremonies were organised by the JVP members of the areas.

Jayasinghe who was the first MP for Nuwara-Eliya to visit the areas in his electorate after having won at the recent general election, told a meeting held in Maskeliya that the JVP at its first attempt sent only one representative to the House of Representatives Nihal Galapaththy.

After that election, it had sent 16 members to the Parliament and from the recent general election it had sent 36 members out of 39 candidates. The JVP with the bonus seats it has 39 members in all. It has lost three seats at Wanni, Batticaloa and Badulla. Of the bonus seats the JVP has given two to the UPFA. In the future, we should achieve more seats and form our own government which is our main aim.

The MP said that those elected from our party were from grass roots levels. We have rendered genuine services in the past to the masses. It was the reason why we were elected to Parliament with a thumping majority. The country has been ruled for 56 years since the independence in 1948, and the rulers of the UNP and the SLFP have not done genuine services and this was the question raised by every individual.

They have not used the valuable resources that were available in our own country. Instead they have shown the ways for luxurious life through foreign aid. The people were made debtors to foreign countries by the then rulers. Today every person is liable to be a debtor to a foreign country for Rs. 150,000.

He said in January, this year under the leadership of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga we entered into an agreement for an Alliance. Under it, we contested the general election. According to the agreement, we have taken charge of four ministries and four deputy ministries.

With that, we would render great service to the masses. Our main aim is to save the country from foreign invasion and take it towards development. The people have elected us to power for genuine services. They have faith in us. We will dedicate our services for the progress of the nation. No change has been made in our agreement.

If any attempt is made to change the agreement, we, the 36 members will have to act against the Government. We will not be a part for another war in the country. All communities such as Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims are citizens of this country. The privileges enjoyed by the majority should be enjoyed by the minorities too. We do not have any divisions among ourselves. We all are human beings. Everybody should think that this country is ours and we have become part and parcel of it.

Prior to 1948, we were ruled by Europeans. They did not own this country. They left the country in 1948 after handing over the country to us. All citizens have the rights to live in the country. Those who have ruled us for the past 56 years have pawned us to the foreigners. If we want to get redeemed by ourselves from the foreigners, we should work very hard. We all should unite together and work.

We all have to become hardworkers of the country. Then only, we can achieve good results, for progress. The country's politicians have changed their parties, according to their own policies and thereby the aspirations of the people have been sold out for the luxurious lives of such politicians.

This should be abolished. The members made promises to the masses and they should implement them accordingly. We should think very carefully about their future progress. People are the assets of a country. We, the MPs should go to their feet and serve. I am proud to say that it was the late President R. Premadasa who did door-to-door service to the poor masses of the country. It was the reason the masses had more faith in him.

He said that it is not a proper service, if the rulers in their luxurious cars and return. I feel very sorry when I look round the inner roads of Maskeliya, they are found with mud and pits. The members of the Pradeshiya Sabha, did not take any care to repair the roads.

See, what a pity? We have planned to repair the roads of the towns. When we are allocated funds for development purposes in the budget, we will surely repair the roads and make every effort to develop the country. We will sacrifice our lives for the progress of the people of the country. We were elected to serve the masses, and not to draw a big salary.

The JVPers in the Pradeshiya Sabhas, Municipal Councils and Provincial Councils have received money as salaries not for their livelihood but those salaries were deposited with the JVP funds used for the welfare and development.

If we all jointly work hard, we will be able to provide employment to our youth. What we got Rs. 3,095 from Pradeshiya Sabhas as wages, Rs. 18,050 from the Provincial Councils and Rs. 70,000 from the Parliament had been deposited with the JVP funds.
