The college of Chemical Sciences of the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon will be hosting a conference on Chemical Education for National Development at the Trans Asia Hotel on April 29 and 30 to mark the 25th anniversary of its very successful graduteship program. N. I. N. S. Nadarasa, Registrar states that the two-day conference will be inaugurated by Karu Jayasuriya and will have as guests of honour Dr. Michael Gagan President of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Educational Section as well as Prof. Ho Si Thoang from Vietnam who is the current President of the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies. The keynote speaker will be Professor R. P. Gunawardena, Chairman of the National Education Commission. A number of foreign guests, local chemists, academics and teachers will be presenting papers and attending the conference. There will also be papers from a number of Asian Chemists who will stay on for the conference after attending an executive committee meeting of the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies (FACS) to be hosted in Colombo for the first time on April 28. A very important symposium on 'Chemistry Industry Interaction' sponsored by the ADB Science and Technology personnel project will be held on April 30 at the Trans Asia Hotel. This symposium will be the final academic event of the two-day conference. The keynote speaker at the symposium will be Channa Gunasinghe, Chairman of the Lankem Group of Companies. He will speak on "Mobilisation of Science and Technology to Safeguard the Future Industry". The symposium will end with a high level panel discussion on "How can Industry Upgrade the Quality of Graduateship Program in Chemistry." |
