Int. public speaking contest in London, entries close April 20

A press release by the President of the English Speaking Union of Sri Lanka, Dr. T. P. Amerasinghe states:

The International Public Speaking Competition is run annually and is one of the most successful and far-reaching international programs. It has three overall objectives. It gives young people practical experience in the fundamental skills of public speaking. It provides a focus for learning of effective English and communication skills among young people in countries where English is not the first language. It gives students from a variety of countries and backgrounds a chance to meet, exchange views and form friendship.

The competition was inaugurated first in 1981 with only 3 countries participating. It has now a participation of more than 55 countries. In the last few years the E.S.E of Sri Lanka has effectively participated in the competition. In 2000 a Sri Lankan participant won the first place. In 2002 the E.S.U Sri Lanka's candidate was narrowly defeated to second place.

Schools and colleges in Sri Lanka have worked with the E.S.U to make these events a success.

This year's contest has as its theme the exciting subject - A Borderless World. Participants will spend 4 days in London from 11th to 15th May, 2004.

Dr. T. P. Amerasinghe, President, E.S.U of Sri Lanka said: The program will conclude trips to the theatre and the Houses of Parliament, free time to explore London and workshop on debating and public speaking which are designed to be enjoyable and interesting.

It will culminate in the formation of a mock Parliament where newly created political parties will try to solve a problem of national importance.

In addition some participants will be able to stay with members of the E.S.U and their families outside London in order to give them first hand experience of life in UK. Dr. Amerasinghe hoped that this year's participation will be as successful as in the previous years. Entries close on April 20th.
