Maharagama special correspondent, Vehelle Piyathilake The annual Viscum Ransilu awards presentation ceremony 2003 of the National Crafts Council was held at the New Town Hall recently under the patronage of the Ambassador of Japan in Sri Lanka, Akio Suda recently. The awards winners were selected from the National Handicraft Exhibition 2003 held at the National Art Gallery in January 2003. 99 talented craftsmen were awarded with Viscum Ransilu awards and cash prizes. The overall best craftsman's award was won by G. H. Gamini Premasinghe of Madawala, Kandy for his creation., a silver carved tray. E. V. Ranasinghe of Bandarawela won the second place for his wood carving "Doratupala Rupaya". The third place was won by Mrs. Dammika Nicolas for her "Sesath". Two awards were presented to two reputed and talented artists who have served for the uplift of their arts. P. M. Devendra of Nattarampota, Kandy was awarded the award of once in lifetime for his dedication to preserve and uplift the gold and silver jewellery art. Joe Abeywickrama, international awards winner for his role in cinema was presented with a special "Viscum Ransilu" Award. This was a concept of the Chairman of the National Crafts Council, Dr. Buddhi Keerthisena to honour the national artists. |
