East goes gay for festive season

M. A. Phakurdeen, Addalaichenai group correspondent

People of the East, too, are making all elaborate arrangements to celebrate this year's Sinhala-Tamil New Year in a fitting manner.

People are seen in towns in large numbers to purchase their festival requirements. While the Sinhalese of the Ampara district flock to the town of Ampara for the New Year purchases; Hindus in the district go to Kalmunai, Akkarapattu and Pottuvil towns for their New year shopping.

The pavement hawkers dominate both sides of the roads and selling textile items, pots and pans and varieties of food at cheaper rates.

Meanwhile mobile textile shops are also seen in the very interior Tamil areas selling items to the people. Vans and lorries are deployed to carry textiles and consumer items. Textile shops are kept open even till midnight for the convenience of Hindus and Buddhists during the festive season.

They say that they could purchase anything they require. The prices are reasonable and economical.
