Hambantota hails Mahinda's appointment as PM

M. R. M. Niyas, Hambantota special correspondent

The people in the Hambantota district were overjoyed by the induction of Mahinda Rajapkse as the 13th Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

They expressed their gratitude to the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and the United People's Freedom Alliance for designating their son of the soil as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party which was formed in 1951 with the sole aim of bringing the all major forces together for a social revolution, faced a major setback with the sudden demise of the Prime Minister S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike. Since then the party has faced challenges and obstacles.

Under every circumstances Mahinda stood steadfast with their leaders of the SLFP to protect and preserve the party. Prime Minister Rajapakse was loyal to his party and partymen. He believed that the party discipline was the prime object for the sustenance of a party. His dedication to the party and the people of Ruhuna has contributed to secure this prestigious post of Premiership.

Prime Minister Rajapakse is a man with a vision who always stood with the common man and down trodden.

The Daily News spoke to a cross section of masses in the Giruwapattuwa who were pleased by Mahinda Rajapakse'a appointment to the post of Premiership.

K. Somapala, No. 560, Kudagama II, Andalla said: "People in our village are very happy at the appointment of Mahinda Rajapakse as the new Premier. We know that he would serve the masses in the Ruhuna as well as the whole country".

H. K. Gamthumawathie, Pragathi Curd Stall, Andella, Weerawila said: "The induction of Mahinda Rajapakse as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka has given us the strength, courage and also the pleasure. He is a tower of strength to us. The new Premier knows the every nook and corner of the Giruwapaththuwa. Therefore it is not necessary to write about the problems of the people are facing in this region. We were expecting that Rajapakse would be sworn in as the Prime Minister. It has become a reality."

"I am pleased that a respected leader from Ruhuna has been appointed as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. He is respected by the people of the whole country. He has no barriers to serve the common man and does not tolerate religious, caste, creed or any other differences, said Faiz Mowlana, a businessman in Hambantota.

M. Siripala, a fruit stall owner in Hambantota: "It was of the view that the new Prime Minister served the party with much dedication and he was a respected leader among all quarters of the community."

M. K. Nilanthi Uduwila, Tissamaharamaya said: "I am happy that a Prime Minister has been appointed from the Hambantota district. The new Premier is the most suitable person to hold this post at a time like this. I hope that he would continue to serve the common masses of this country."

"We are happy that a renowned politician from the part of the island has become the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. We know our new Premier would strive to bring a lasting peace to the island," was the view expressed by Darmalingam Dayabaran, a businessman of Hambantota.

T. M. Miskin, a retired government servant said: "Prime Minister Rajapakse has all the necessary qualifications to assume this post. He has followed his father's footsteps to achieve this post.

"I am happy that the leader of the Hambantota district has become the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. Mahinda is an industrious and courageous leader, said M. K. Edwin, a senior teacher of the area.

W. H. Somapala, Kudagama 10, Weligatta:" New Prime Minister had dedicated himself for the well-being of the party and partymen rather than any others. So we would be unhappy if he was not appointed to this post."

A. H. M. Marzook, Attorney-at-law in Hambantota expressed his views as follows: "Mahinda Rajapakse could become the second political leader from the Ruhuna to be elevated to the post of Prime Minister before this. Dr. W. Dahanayake was appointed as the PM in 1959. The people of this district have got the result for the hardwork. I have no doubt that he would render a great service to the masses whom he loves forever.

N. Gunathilake, a three-wheeler owner said that the PM Mahinda Rajapakse was a friend of common man. He feels the pulses of the down trodden. I am glad at the appointment of Mahinda Rajapakse as the Prime Minister.

M. T. Sirajudeen was of the view that the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse had served the masses of the Hambantota district without any discrimination. I have no doubt that he would render a yeoman service to the people of this country in time to come.
