Special police team to oversee Wayamba elections

by Sarath Malalasekera

The Police Election Secretariat has deployed a special team to track down army deserters and underworld gang leaders who are likely to disrupt the forthcoming North Western Provincial Council (Wayamba) election scheduled for April 24.

During the General Election 200 Army deserters involved in election violence were arrested.

"We will never allow what happened in 2001 and 2004 elections to take place at the next Wayamba elections DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne told the 'Daily News' yesterday".

Therefore they have deployed several special teams in addition to policemen attached to the four police stations in the Wayamba Province from the divisions of Chilaw, Kurunegala, Kuliyapitiya and Nikweratiya, he added.

DIG Wickremaratne appealed to the public to assist the police personnel on duty during the Wayamba election period to identify the trouble makers in those areas. They could contact the nearest police station or any police officer on duty to pass on the information.

In addition to special teams deployed in Wayamba there will be another team at the Police Headquarters monitoring the situation on a daily basis, DIG Wickremaratne said. Three armed policemen will be deployed near every polling booth to avoid any major incidents, DIG Gamini Navaratne said.

Maximum protection to the voters and the candidates will be provided during the election period DIG Navaratne added.

Three DIGs have been appointed by IGP Indra de Silva to oversee the Wayamba elections. They are DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne in charge of Election Violence, DIG Gamini Navaratne will be in charge of the unit dealing with violation of election laws and DIG Mahinda Balasooriya will be in charge of Communications.
