Blast by left-wing militants kills 26 Indian policemen RANCHI, India, Thursday (AFP) At least 26 policemen were killed when a landmine suspected to have been planted by leftwing extremists blew up their vehicle in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, police said Thursday. The vehicle hit the mine Wednesday night as the patrol was on its way to Chaibasa, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) south of state capital Ranchi, to investigate reports that insurgents had raided a village, an officer said. Chaibasa police chief Praveen Kumar, who was injured in the attack, is in a critical condition, he added. Jharkhand state police chief R.R. Prasad blamed the attack on the outlawed People's War Group, an armed peasant movement which holds sway in large parts of the mineral rich state. |
