Oarsmen impress at SAF games - 5 silver and 2 bronze medals

by Richard Dwight

The broad banner at the entrance of the Colombo Rowing Club that read "congratulations to the victorious Sri Lanka rowing team to the SAF Games 2004", was the herald of a warm welcome extended by the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) on wednesday evening to our national oarsmen, on their impressive performance of winning five silver and two bronze medals, at the now concluded South Asian Federation Games held at Islamabad.

The main purpose of the evening was to brief the media on the aspect of rowing at the games and, also to afford an opportunity for the 12 member rowing team led by Chanaka Talpahewa and coach Lakmal Wickremage to air the views before the media.

Mention must be made that before the team left for the games, they underwent strenuous training and coaching sessions under the guidance of Wikremage with the much needed overall assistance coming from HNB Assurance Limited, Dimo and Slimline.

It was gathered from the coach, Lakmal Wickremage, that this was the second time that the National rowing team competed in an official international meet.

The first was in 2002 at the Busan Asian Games, where the team did not farewell but gained experience.

Two members in the team to Busan, were in this team to the SAF Games. Wickremage was highly pleased with the discipline and behaviour of the oarsmen and, was extremely happy that in the year, when rowing was introduced for the first at the Games, every member contributed towards the winning of a silver or bronze medal.

The President of the ARASL, Deva Henry, did the country, proud, by being nominated juror for flowing at the Games. Both Henry and the Vice President ARASL, Nihal Silva, were of the view that there is every prospect of a bright future for racing.

They also disclosed that the South Asian Federation games will become the South Asian Games and will be held next year in Sri Lanka.
