PM was a good sportsman at Thurstan

While many are aware of the of new premier Mahinda Rajapakse's exploits in the field of political life his adventures in the field of sports remain little known. During his school days at Thurstan he was an outstanding athlete and was a member of the college team that took part in the then prestigious Public school meet.

He was a sprinter of repute and another member of this contingent was his life long companion Panduka Jayasinghe who too was involved with politics in the same party Mahinda represents.

He still maintains a keen interest in athletics and was one time the President of the AAA. He was also a member of the Thurstan 2nd XV rugby team and as a proud father, he had the fortune of seeing his son representing Sri Lanka in the national youth rugby team.

Though the PM was not a active cricketer in school he has many fond memories of the Thurstan-Issipathana match which he never fails to attend.
