News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Mandate given to UPFA for permanent peace - Ceylon Workers' Alliance The mandate given by the progressive masses of this country to the United People's Freedom Alliance at the last general election is to bring an external and perpetual solution to the ethnic problem and eliminate the poverty of the people, said R. K. Suresh, the Director Administration of Ceylon Workers' Alliance and the General Secretary of Ceylon Estates Staff Association in a press release. This victory clearly indicates that the masses of this country have reposed their confidence and trust on the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. Though certain power hungry politicians especially those who represent the plantation workers criticise and sling mud at President directly and indirectly the plantation workers have voted to the UPFA Party in large numbers. After the overwhelming victory of UPFA they try to establish Alliance with the UPFA for the formation of new government. Their prime intention of joining with the present regime is not to deliver goods to the plantation workers but to obtain Ministry portfolio to lead luxurious life and build up themselves. The President knows the deeds and misdeeds of these politicians and she will not fall prey to their's assurances. It was the PA government, which created a separate ministry for the workers in the plantation and we are of confident that she would bestow the Ministry of Estate Infrastructure to the politicians who was with her throughout without crossing over to other parties merely for the ministry portfolio. Now the JVP has mixed up with the mainstream of politics and there is no doubt that they would take action in every respect to elevate the living conditions of the estate workers, who are suffering for the past several decades. He called upon the Prime Minister and the President to take suitable action to undertake development projects in the plantation sector including the estate staff who are deprived in every aspect. |
