News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Tyronne leaves Foreign Ministry Former Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando taking leave of his ministry officials today expressed his thanks and appreciation for the cooperation extended to him during his tenure of office and urged them to extend the same cooperation to his successor, a press release stated yesterday. He observed that as a democracy, Sri Lanka had been regularly changing governments through the ballot. In this context he expressed particular satisfaction that the recent elections were conducted peacefully without violence and bloodshed. He expressed his sincere hope that the country would achieve durable peace and prosperity in the future. Referring to the appointment of Heads of Mission, he pointed out that such appointments were made by President Kumaratunga on his recommendations. But there were several instances where such recommendations were not accepted by her. The Minister expressed his intention to continue taking an active interest in foreign affairs and the Foreign Ministry in his capacity as an opposition member in Parliament. He assured that he would extend his support for all efforts to strengthen the Foreign Ministry to discharge its responsibilities and duties. |
