Sand and clay mining needs a new policy

Wennappuwa Central groupcorrespondent

Sand, bricks and tiles are the main requirements for construction. Sand mining is carried out in the beds of Maha Oya and Deduru Oya rivers. The commercial scale sand mining in the above rivers has led to large scale corruption. Sand mining is a lucrative business for mining authorities.

Permits to sand and clay mining are issued by the Geological Department under certain conditions, but unfortunately the same Department lacks machinery to monitor and enforce the regulations.

Wennappuwa electorate dominates the manufacture of bricks and tiles.

There are nearly one thousand tile factories operating in the Wennappuwa electorate. A work force of over one and a half lakhs are provided in these factories directly. Indirectly another one lakh of persons are benefitted by the industry.

Wennappuwa electorate is also the hub of activity for manufacture and marketing of bricks.

Obtaining adequate supplies of clay for brick and tile industries has become a serious problem. The attention of the policy makers should be focused on the issue.

Clay deposits along the banks of river Maha Oya is badly exhausted.

The idea of exploiting off shore areas as a substitute for river sand faded away.

Building construction contractors express the view that the inadequate supply of sand has caused a serious set back in the construction industry.
