Impact Study on primary education to be released

The Central Province Ministry of Education along with the Teacher In-service Project Central Province (TIP-CP), will present the findings of an Impact Study conducted to find out the developments in primary education resulting from project intervention, on 20th April 2004 at 10.00 a.m. at the Education Resource Centre in Gurudeniya, Kandy.

Invitees include officers from the Ministry of Education, the National Institute of Education (NIE), and selected educational personnel from the provincial ministries of education. The Minister of Education - Central Province will be the chief guest. The National Director - Basic Education Sector Programme (BESP) will moderate the proceedings.

TIP-CP is a component of the basic education sector programme of the Ministry of Education. It is supported by funding from the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of the Federal Republic of Germany and is implemented with assistance of the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ).

Since 2000, the TIP-CP has been engaged in primary in-service training and the impact study undertaken by them in 2003 points to quite positive and encouraging developments in primary education in the Central Province. A new learning culture with child-centred activity based learning taking place in attractive classrooms appears to be emerging.

Teachers are now more concerned about affected children and remedial teaching. In-service advisors (primary) have become more competent in carrying out their duties and have developed close professional relationships with officers, principals and teachers. School families are now more inclined to engage in school-based teacher training and invite community participation in school and school family activities.

The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion.
