by Sandasen Marasinghe Colombo Chief Magistrate Kusala Sarojanee Weerawardana yesterday sentenced 264 accused who attempted to illegally emigrate to Italy to one years rigorous imprisonment each. The attempt was made on December 24, last year. They were charged under the Immigration and Emigration Act with attempting to flee to Italy in a fishing trawler from Chilaw. The accused admitted to the charge. The Magistrate also imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000 each and in default a three month term of simple imprisonment. A total of 269 suspects were taken into custody by the Navy on December 24. Five had not been produced before Court since they were admitted to hospital. Prison Officers said they were suffering from chicken pox. |
