Rs.100 million luxury tented hotel for Trinco

by Shirajiv Sirimane

The Jetwing hotel Group will invest Rs. 100 million to construct a luxury tented hotel in Trincomalee. The first of its kind to be built the hotel would be opened in November.

The proposed hotel would be built on a 23-acre block with beach frontage adjoining the Nilaweli Beach Hotel and overlooking Pigeon Island. The property was owned by the Jetwing Group but was not used.

"We waited for the right economic climate for this investment," said the Director Sales and Marketing Jetwing Group Lalin De Mel.

UK manufactured luxury tents would be utilised for the hotel and most of the Spa and other equipment would be from Europe.

The management would build 24 luxury tented units in a wooden setting adjoining the beach with a private garden attached to each tent. In addition individual wooden jacuzzis, massage benches and a private spa too would be added to each tent. In a bid to cater to the high-end clientele ten tents would be air-conditioned.

Our target market would be luxury high end, eco friendly and marine enthusiastic travellers both locally and mainly from Europe," he said. The main market is expected from Europe and they are also looking at the local market as well. "During the season there is only limited quality accommodation in Trincomalee and now we hope to fill this void," he said.

He said that at the recently concluded World Travel exhibition in Germany they outlined this proposal to top end travel agents. "The response was very positive and we are expecting a high occupancy for the next season," he said.

"The theme of the concept is minimal intervention from the beach and there will be very little indication of what is going on inside the property. The pristine nature of the relationship of the site to the beach is to be maintained as much as possible, as would the condition of the site. The site is conceived as a Forest Garden in which guests commune with the natural environment living under canvas on the edge of civilisation," he said.

The public areas consist of the beach and a beach bar and dining area. This is serviced by a kitchen and stores made of traditional building materials with an inner core of modern material to fulfil safety requirements. "There will be no swimming pool, and each private garden doubles as a private spa with individual wooden Jacuzzi tubs and massage benches for visits from specialists for required treatment," he said.

Jetwing Hotels also owns and manages 14 properties, Lighthouse Hotel and Spa Galle, Saman Villas Bentota, Ayurveda Pavilions Negombo, Villa Beruwela, Mermaid Hotel and Club Kalutara, Hunas Falls Hotel Kandy, St. Andrew's Nuwara Eliya, Yala Safari Game Lodge Yala, Blue Oceanic Beach Hotel, Seashells Hotel and Sea Garden Hotel in Negombo.

Their flagship property Blue Water hotel, Wadduwa, was officially recognised by the Sri Lanka Tourist Board (SLTB), as a five star hotel.
