Pakistani shooters set new records ISLAMABAD, Tuesday (AFP) - Pakistani shooters Monday set new records and grabbed two gold medals at the ninth South Asian Federation (SAF) games. Pakistan's Muhammad Shafiq, who made his international debut in this event, set a new SAF games record by scoring 138 points in the individual skeet. His compatriot, Khurram Inam took the silver medal while Nuruddin Salim of Bangladesh won the bronze. In the team event of skeet, Pakistan won gold with 342 points. Shafiq's 116 out of 125 points in the team category was also a new SAF record. India clinched silver medal and Bangladesh bronze. India won the womens ten-meter air pistol team event. Sri Lanka took silver medal and Pakistan bronze. Indias Shweta Chaudhry won gold, Anu Raj silver and Himantha Vijesinha of Sri Lanka bronze in the singles category. Pakistans Nadeem Ahmad won the gold medal in the mens hammer throw final by twice throwing the hammer 62.88 metres. His compatriot Habib Ullah won the silver medal with Indias Nirbhay Singh bronze. In the womens high jump final, Indias Sangeetha Mohan won the gold medal. Another Indian, Sahana Kumari, finished second with Priyangika Maduwanthi of Sri Lanka in the 3rd place. Indias Madhuri Singh won gold in the womens 1500 metre race ahead of Pakistans Sumaira Zahoor. In badminton, Indias Trupti Murgunde won the womens singles event. In the final, she overcame the challenge of her compatriot Meenakshi Bilagali 9-11, 11-7 and 13-10. Indias Soumy Adeep and Achanta Sharath have reached the mens singles final in table tennis. In the semi finals, Adeep beat Pakistans Farjad Saif while Sharath beat Piyadasa Thilina of Sri Lanka. On the eighth day of the games India maintained its position as top medal winner with 87 gold, 45 silver and 22 bronze medals. Hosts Pakistan stand second in the medal charts with 28 gold, 46 silver and 42 bronze medals. Sri Lanka is third in with 12 gold, 26 sliver and 47 bronze. Around 1,800 athletes are vying for a total of 534 medals in 15 events from March 29 to April 7. Afghanistan joined the SAF games this year for the first time since they were held in Kathmandu, Nepal, in 1983. |
