Companies sponsor erection of hoardings near waterfalls

by Wasantha Ramanayake

The Federation of Wildlife Conservation, a non-governmental Organisation entered into agreements in Colombo with two companies to erect hoardings close to waterfalls and wetlands recently.

In terms of the agreement, the Federation of Wildlife Conservation (FWC) entered into two agreements with Dankotuwa Porcelain Ltd. and the CIC Paints Company Limited to raise hoardings close to six waterfalls and the Bundala and Kalametiya wetlands.

Dankotuwa Porcelain Ltd. would initially finance to erect hoardings close to six waterfalls depicting its name, source, height, bio-diversity of the area and do's and dont's by the visitors.

Visitors to these falls have been responsible for the unwarranted behaviour where most of them dump garbage, polluting the vicinity; going to the extent of even breaking liquor bottles after consuming.

Dankotuwa Porcelain would spend Rs. 100,000 to erect hoardings close to the six waterfalls as an initial step. The project would be extended to other water falls depending on the success of the initial stage."

The company was committed to protect the environment: We never use diesel, instead we use gas which is less damaging to the environment. The gold and platinum used in the process would be recycled.

CIC General Manager Gerald de Saram said that his company although being profit oriented has an obligation by the employees, customers, society and the environment.

"If they suffer the business could not sustain. He said that the company manages their waste carefully with even the water being purified before it was released to the environment."

"Although the company was multinational in nature we are Sri Lankan, we should safeguard our culture, society and the environment," de Saram said.

All action taken to conserve the environment and the wildlife would be negatory since there was no National Policy with regard to Conservation, Federation Executive Director Nishantha Bandara said.
