The Heads of Mission of the European Union represented in Sri Lanka note with satisfaction the high voter turnout in the Parliamentary elections. This clearly shows the democratic spirit of the Sri Lankan nation. The Royal Netherlands Embassy, representing the European Union Presidency states, the levels of violence have been reduced compared to previous elections although the election related murders and attempted murders are deeply regrettable. The Elections Commissioner, the Independent Police Commission and the local and international observers are to be complimented for securing the reduction in violence. It was encouraging that many people in the North and East were able to exercise their franchise through cluster arrangements. However it is a matter of deep concern that the election process in the North and East was tainted by intimidation and violence. The Heads of Mission reiterate the European Union's support for the peace process and encourages a new government and all other parties involved to restart the negotiations at the earliest possible date. A resumption of peace talks, along with strict adherence to the terms of the cease-fire agreement, is essential to sustain the peace process for the benefit of all ethnic communities in Sri Lanka. |
