Rasmussen clinches Lectra Monthly Medal by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports correspondent Expatriate professional Poul Rasmussen took the Victoria Golf Course by storm on Saturday when he recorded Nett score of 64 to clinch the men's title while the versatile Niloo Jayatillake with a score of 70 Nett took away the title for ladies at the Lectra Monthly medal golf championship organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and sponsored by Lectra Apparel Technologies and worked at the Victoria golf course in Rajawella on Saturday. Soft spoken Poul Rasmussen was undoubtably the star and kept his cool and with some calculated swipes made the fine score of 64 which will no doubt lift up the championship ladder for the grand prix. Up and coming Nihal Alagoda on 69 finished second. The third spot was shared by Sam Gunaratne, and Peter Bright, with 71 each. Lying third with 72 each were veteran Si Kasthuriratne, schoolboy Sampath Hemachandra and Carl Kelaart. Binupa Wijesinghe who leads the grand prix race finished with 77 nett. But he has built up a substantial lead which may be difficult to overtake in this tournament which has only two months to go in the 12 month championship. Bespectacled Niloo Jayatillake after some very consistent performances in which she finished among the top, at last came good by winning the month championship with a score of 70. Hers were a fine performance as two top contenders for the title race leader Suwen Selvaratnam, Indira Tibblins and her sister Roshni Sangani came close to her with 76 each. At the end of February the table of points read Suwen Selvaratnam leading with 332 points followed by Niloo Jayatillake with 326 points and when the table of points is computed there is the likelihood of change in the positions. The boys junior title was won by Sampath Hemachandra with 72 nett with his twin brother Sidath Hemachandra finishing runner-up with 74 nett. In third place was Sahil Malhothra with 76. Occupying the fourth slot with 77 were Binupa Wijesinghe, and Chamil Wickremasinghe. But Binupa Wijesinghe has the disadvantage of playing to a handicap of 7 against others having a bigger handicap. The Mini Junior competitions - the nine hole competition for the kids was won by another consistent performer in Ravana Devadas with 23 nett and the runner-up berth went to his little sister Rudrani Devadas with 27 nett. In third place was Kelly Rao 35 and Akhil Rao finished fourth with 45. The golfers revelled on a lively day with the neatly laid fairways and the course itself green and luxuriant following the recent intermittent showers. |
