Radella Speed Hill Climb on April 14 by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Correspondent The Annual Radella Speed Hill Climb organised by the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDAR) will be held on Wednesday, April 14 commencing at 8.30. This will also form a part of the SLARDAR Championship for 2004. According to the President of the SLARDAR Rodney Mason though there are five SLARDAR Championship events conducted by the organisers the main attraction will be the 'Fastest Time of the Day' award for the T. Jayarajasingham Memorial Trophy. Last year Suranjith Premadasa behind a modified formula coming out of a self exile did a fantastic run to defeat the favourite and the record holder Rohan De Silva who encountered some engine problem mid way. But the participation of this duo who are the best exponent in formula racing in Sri Lanka revived the old but healthy rivalry which exists between them. But still Rohan de Silva is the course record when he timed 31.85 seconds in 2001. This year Miss Shehera de Silva is expected to participate in this hill climb and if she does, she will become the first lady to be behind a formula in a hill climb in the history of motor racing in Sri Lanka. In the Super cars event according to Mahes Gammanpila of SLARDAR Hill stormer Nishan Weerasrooiya will be seen in action in his newly acquired Mitsubishi Evolution 8. Last year's winner Arvinda Premadasa, Dinesh Deheragoda, Royaz Farouk, Rizvi Farouk, Dan Dissanayake and a host of others will be seen in action. Others who are expected to burn the tracks are Nalin D. Perera, Romani de Silva, Carmen Thenuwara,Yoga Perera, Nihal Premasiri, Dinesh Jayawardena, Dilshard Hamdoon, Javidh and Israq Wahab, Dammika Peiris, Rameez Mahamoor, Kandan Pramasewaran, Rajitha Cooke, Dinesh Senanayake and many others. The fastest timing for motorcycles is held by Shanaka Ambrose - 34.90 seconds. Some of the top riders like Udesh Wedisinghe, Shafraz Junaid, Suresh Fernando, Mohammed Manaf, Kumar Rajapreyar, Indika Gurusinghe, are expected to participate. The track at Radelle is one of the best with a wide road and a steep incline and skill and power is required to come to terms with this course. |
