Jathika Hela Urumaya calls for re-poll in North East

by Kumudini Priyanka Kurugalagamage

The Deputy Leader of the Supreme Sangha Council of the Jathika Hela Urumaya, Ven. Omalpe Sobhita Thera yesterday urged that the poll in the North and East be annulled and re-conducted in the presence of foreign polls observers.

The Ven Thera who was addressing a press conference at the Sulaiman Terrace, 'Asapuwa', in Colombo 5 said that two UNP candidates were gunned down as a prelude to disrupt the smooth process of the election in those areas and even children had been engaged to cast votes in the North. "Even Anandasangaree and Devananda had to seek Sinhala military protection to cast their votes and therefore it was certain that Prabakaran denied a democratic poll in those areas", the Thera claimed.

The Thera claimed that the results of the poll clearly indicated that the people did not endorse the peace process initiated by the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Hela Urumaya Propaganda Secretary Ven. Athureliye Rathana Thera said that their party will not support either the Freedom Alliance or the UNF to form a Government but remain independent by watching the interests of the country and cooperate only to take correct decisions.

He expressed delight over their victory amidst mud slinging and assault against them through the State media. Our victory saved the people from falling a prey to a national disaster, he said.

Ven. Kotapola Amarakitthi Thera of the Supreme Sangha Council of Hela Urumaya said that Parliamentarians have to think deeply whether they were going to be divided all the time or whether they were going to act with the interests of the people at heart.

Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera, the Chief of the Supreme Sangha Council bestowed merits on all those patriots, numbering over six hundred thousand, both Buddhist and non-Buddhist, who acted wisely to extend their cooperation to us.

Ven. Rajawatte Vappa Thera and Ven. Hedigalle Wimalasara Thera participated at this press conference.
